University Preparation

WHO CAN APPLY?

The University of Portsmouth together with Language Specialists International offer a composite programme of English language preparation plus Undergraduate or Postgraduate study under the single sponsorship of the University.

If you meet the Academic requirements for admission on one of the following programmes:

Higher National Diploma
Bachelors Degree course
Masters Degree course
Research Degree

and you have at least IELTS 4.0 or 4.5 or 5.0 (subject to the University course you wish to study) you may qualify to receive an Unconditional Offer for Study.

You can apply to follow the combined programme if:

You hold a conditional offer for a degree course at Portsmouth, but have not yet met the English language standard for direct entry and you have a current IELTS Certificate or other Approved English language proof of level at the minimum required level for acceptance onto the Pre-Sessional English course.
You can satisfy all academic conditions for entry to one of the University of Portsmouth degree courses, and you have a current IELTS Certificate or other Approved English language proof of level at the minimum required level for acceptance onto the Pre-Sessional English course. COURSE CONTENT

Your course will include improving your general English vocabulary, grammar, fluency and comprehension. You will also work to improve your writing and reading. You will also receive intensive instruction in English for Academic Purposes and Study skills, and will include the following areas:

Research and study skills
Conventions of academic study at a British University
Academic writing, planning and structure of written assignments
Skimming and scanning, reading for gist
Presentations skills
Listening for lectures, note-taking and précis writing
Analytical discussion skills for tutorials and seminars
Referencing and avoiding plagiarism

This will help to prepare you to make the best of your study opportunity at University.
