Registration & Payment

How can I apply for an IELTS exam?

If you wish to register for the IELTS exam, you need to download and print the IELTS application form, complete it in full and attach two recent passport size photos. The photos should have been taken in the last six months and you should sign them on the back. Return the form with the photos together with the payment and a photocopy of your passport or national ID (for EU citizens only). On the application form, you must indicate which ID document you will bring on the test day and the number of this document. On the test day, you are required to bring the same form of identity card.

To summarize, you need to:

a. fill in the application form;
b. attach two recent photos;
c. attach payment;
d. attach a photocopy of your passport or your EU national ID.

You need to send your paperwork to:
IELTS Administrator
Language Specialists International
1-13 Lord Montgomery Way
Portsmouth
PO1 2AH
England

What is the deadline to apply for the test?

Applications are closed when a test is fully booked or ten working days before the test date, whichever comes first.

Can I apply for as many tests as I want?

Yes, you can. You must hand in a completed form, two photos and payment for every test you take.

What is the difference between the Academic and the General Training?

All candidates are tested in four components: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The Listening and Speaking components are the same for all candidates, but the Reading and Writing components are divided into two modules: Academic and General Training.  See IELTS Official Practice Materials or visit www.ielts.org.

Which exam do I have to take, the Academic one or the General one?

Generally speaking, if you are planning to apply for tertiary, undergraduate and postgraduate courses and for professional registration, you need to take the Academic Training module. If you are going to an English speaking country to complete your secondary education, or to undertake work experience or training programmes which are not at degree level, or for immigration purposes, then the General Training module may be more suitable.

To be sure about which module to take before you apply for the exam, you should check the requirements with your prospective receiving institutions (academic institutions/government agencies/professional bodies/employers/sponsors).

How can I pay?

When you send us the application form, you can attach:

  • a cheque made payable to “Language Specialists International”. Please note that we must receive your cheque no later than three weeks before the test date.
  • a postal order obtainable from the post office made payable to “Language Specialists International”. The post office will charge you for this service.
  • if you prefer to pay by credit/debit card, you need to fill in a card payment sheet and send it together with your application form.
  • if you come into our school, you can pay cash.

Can I reserve a place?

We regret that we cannot reserve a place without a completed form and payment.

Preparation at LSI

I would like to prepare my IELTS examination at LSI, what are my options?

If you would like to prepare your IELTS examination at LSI, click here.

How can I order the Official IELTS Practice Materials Pack?

The Pack costs £10; you can send this extra amount together with your application. You can also buy the material at LSI. Alternatively you may order it on www.ielts.org.

The pack includes sample test materials for all modules (General Training and Academic Training) and a CD containing a sample Listening test, together with samples of candidates’ Speaking tests. The main purpose of the Practice Materials Pack is to give IELTS candidates an idea of what the test is like. They also give candidates the opportunity to test themselves to see whether their English is at the level required.

Can I buy IELTS Books from LSI?

We regret that we do not sell books. You can buy them from an English Language Book Shop or online.

Day of the test

What do I have to bring on the day of the test?

You must bring your passport or National ID card. You must bring the same document that you have indicated on the application form.

The only items that you can take into the exam room are: your ID, a couple of pens and pencils, an eraser, pencil sharpener and water in a transparent bottle. You will be asked to leave your bags etc. in a separate room. Please leave your mobile phones there – and make sure that they are switched off!

At what time do I need to arrive at LSI?

You need to arrive at LSI between 8:30 and 9:00 am (click here for a map).

How long does the test take?

The three modules in the morning take about two hours and 40 minutes: Listening (approx. 40 min), Reading (60 min) and Writing (60 min). The Speaking module in the afternoon takes 11-14 min. However, the Speaking test is scheduled between 13:45 and 19:00. You must therefore leave the whole day free for your test!

Are there any breaks during the tests?

There will be no breaks during the morning modules.

What can I do if my passport is at the Home Office?

You are strongly advised to wait until your passport is returned to you before you apply for an IELTS test, as there is often a delay at the Home Office in processing Visa applications. You will NOT be able to take the test without a valid passport or EU National ID.

What can I do if I need to send off my passport to the Home Office or other institutions before the test date?

You MUST ring us to make an appointment to bring your passport to LSI in person first. Our IELTS Administrator will verify it for you so you can take the test with a photocopy.

What happens if I want to postpone or cancel my test?

If you wish to transfer or cancel your test, you must give us at least 34 days’ notice and there will be an administration charge of £25. If you want to transfer or cancel within 34 days, you will be charged the full fee unless you provide appropriate medical evidence to support your request. This medical evidence must be provided no later than five days after the test. An administrative fee of £25 will be deducted from any refund. If your application for a test date transfer has been approved, you must select a test date within the next three-month period depending on availability in our centre. If you wish to transfer to a test date more than three months away, you should apply for a refund and then re-apply for the test.

What happens if I am absent on the day of the test without giving prior notice?

You will lose your full test fee (£100), unless you are able to provide appropriate medical evidence to us to explain your absence. Medical evidence must be provided no later than five days after the test date. Refunds will only be provided for serious illness and an administrative fee of £25 will be deducted from any refund. If your application for a test date transfer has been approved, you must select a test date within the next three-month period depending on availability in our centre. If you wish to transfer to a test date more than three months away, you should apply for a refund and then re-apply for the test.

Results

When do I get my results?

The test results are issued 13 calendar days after the test. We normally send them to you by post. If you need to collect them from our centre, please let our invigilators know on the day of the test.

Can someone else collect my results?

Yes. On the test date, you must inform our invigilator this person’s name and date of birth and he/she must present his/her ID to our staff before collecting your results.

Can you give me my results by phone, e-mail or fax?

We regret that we are only permitted to release the results by letter.

What can I do if I am unhappy with my results?

We are not allowed to re-mark your test in our centre or give you feedback/comments on your test performance. However, you can apply for your test to be re-marked by British Council London, who will usually notify us of the re-mark results within six weeks from the date they receive your exam materials. There is a charge of £60 for this service, which will be refunded if your result is changed to a higher band score. If you would like to go ahead with EOR, please complete an EOR form and send it back to us as soon as possible, together with a cheque of £60 made payable to “Language Specialists International” and your ORIGINAL Test Report Form. Please note that all EOR applications must be made within six weeks of the test date.
